Club Members Explore The Art Of Photography The Club's Photography Program Has Developed
|
Photography is a fairly new program at the Club. It teaches Club members to learn about and explore many aspects of the art of photography. Coach Herla developed the program to teach Club members the technical aspects of digital photography, such as exposure and composition, in addition to using creativity and self-expression.
Club members learn everything from the basics of properly handing a camera, operation of manual settings, the different types of cameras and their uses, and many other important components of photography such as exposure, aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. After learning these basics, Club members are taught about composition, which includes different types of lighting, angles, framing, leading lines, and balancing the foreground and background of their subjects.
Coach Herla explained, “After every lesson, I allow the kids to experiment with what they just observed. My main goal is to help them express their creativity and have fun while gaining knowledge about photography. I don't want them to just go and snap a bunch of pictures. I want them to connect with their subject and look at things from a different perspective. I have seen this program help many students discover new talents, passions, and goals.”
Special thanks to P&G for providing the Club with a grant to run this program. Without the much-needed funding, the children wouldn’t have the opportunity to truly explore and learn the art of photography in its various aspects. The Photography Program is offered at all seven Club sites and currently has more than 80 participants. The Club looks forward to expanding this program and organizing a photography exhibit in the near future.

Career Expo For Club Members Club Members Get A Head Start On Their Professional Aspirations
|
The Club held a Career Exposition at Canoga Park High School on Friday, April 27, to inform Club members about various career opportunities and how to be successful in the work force. The event included representatives from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Western Beauty Industry, Los Angeles Police Department, US Marines, Amgen, State Farm Insurance, Pierce College Nursing Program, Los Angeles Mission College Culinary Arts Institute, and more. Club members also participated in two extremely helpful workshops at the event: “Dress for Success” organized by Macy’s, and an Interviewing Skills Workshop sponsored by Proyecto. This was a very valuable addition to the event, as students learned how to dress and conduct themselves professionally for future interviews.
This was the Club’s first Career Exposition and it was a great success! Club members had the opportunity to walk around and explore aspects of many different careers and industries. The representatives were very informative and helpful in answering questions for Club members that were interested in specific industries or positions. The teens were engaged with the company representatives and were given the opportunity to get a head start on planning their careers.
A Career Expo was also held at the Main Clubhouse to expose younger Club members to many different careers in order to help them develop their interests and aspirations. West Hills Hospital representatives introduced Club members to careers in nursing, ER, human resources, accounting, cardiology, and pediatrics. Short videos were played and presentations were conducted. A Q&A session after each presentation helped Club members learn about the varying responsibilities of each career within the organization.
The Club thanks all of the companies and organizations for participating in this successful event and making a lasting impact on Club members. The Club will invite different companies to the Main Clubhouse every other month to share information about career opportunities and teach kids about the variety of careers that are offered within that particular industry in order to continue to educate, inspire, and encourage the youngsters to follow their dreams and professional aspirations.

HIYA!!! Former Power Ranger Chris Stevenson Puts A Kick Into Our Club Programs!
|
|
Chris Stevenson, the rock star of kickboxing and martial arts instruction and owner of Stevenson Fitness in Oak Park will bring a dojo to the children of the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley, starting in July. This new martial arts program coincides with the opening of the newly renovated Multi-purpose oom at the Club.
According to the Club’s President/CEO, Jan Sobel, “The most important lesson for the children will be the honor, respect and discipline that come along with formal martial arts training. This program fits in perfectly with our goal of helping young people become positive, productive and self-fulfilled young adults.”
Chris Stevenson added, “Stevenson Fitness is dedicated to serving the community and I’m honored to have been invited to share the ancient skills of martial arts with the Boys & Girls Club.”
Stevenson Fitness has raised thousands of dollars through its Kicking for The Cause program for charities like Avon Walk, Regenerate Film’s Open Borders and Japan’s tsunami victims.

S.M.A.R.T. GIRLS & PASSPORT TO MANHOOD PROGRAMS Helping Club Members Develop Into Leaders In The Community |
S.M.A.R.T. GIRLS (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) provides young Club members with a strong sense of GIRL POWER! Club members in this program learn about the importance of teamwork and cooperation, loyalty and friendship, motivation and confidence. The girls also learn about health and fitness, and receive education about their development process, as their bodies are growing and changing.
Coach Karen of Blythe Elementary School stated, “These girls are able to confide in and connect with the S.M.A.R.T. GIRLS Staff in ways they may not be able to at home. It is so rewarding to know that we can make a difference in their lives by offering advice, support, and motivation, helping them develop into strong and confident, young women.”
Passport to Manhood is designed to teach young boys about self-confidence, motivation, independence, and teamwork. Due to the fact that many of our Club members come from single-parent families, they lack a strong male role model in their lives.
“Passport to Manhood is a very crucial program to these young boys who need role models and mentors to bond with and build strong relationships with during these key years of their development. We provide them with the tools and advice to overcome peer pressure and many other obstacles they may face in their communities. Rather than getting caught up with the wrong people or getting themselves into trouble, they are learning to make smart and responsible choices and stay on the right track,” said Coach Benjamin of Reseda Elementary School. |

AN EDUCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM Canoga Park High School Has ‘Mad Scientists’ On The Loose! |
The Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley has launched the “Mad Science” program at Canoga Park High School for Club members who have an interest in the field of science. By conducting scientific experiments and other stimulating activities, Club members gain an appreciation and better understanding of the mathematical and scientific properties in their everyday surroundings. The most popular activity so far is the rocket lab, which presents lessons on rocketry, including an introduction to engineering, sparking the interest of many Club members in possible future careers in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.
The “Mad Science” program is not only geared toward Club members who have an interest in science, but also those who are facing struggles in science-related subjects. Because the Mad Science program is in conjunction with their in-class assignments, students are receiving additional assistance in their studies while enjoying this exciting new program. Along with after-school tutoring, the Mad Science program helps students improve their grades in science-related subjects and encourages them to expand their minds and explore new and different opportunities and activities.

DIGITAL ARTS PROGRAM Film Producers in the Making |
|
Digital Arts is a creative program offered at all six of our sites. The complete program includes Photography, Music, Graphic Arts, and Film.
Club members who participate in any of the programs can submit their digital artwork to the annual Club Tech Digital Arts Festivals competitions. The festivals celebrate Club members’ creativity in five areas; web design, graphic design, photo illustration, music composition and film production, providing Club members with recognition at the local, regional, and national levels.
The Film program runs all year long at the Teen Center in the Main Clubhouse. It teaches Club members to use their artistic and creative abilities to produce movies and short films. The teens put together their own story lines and scripts, as well as film and edit their own projects, eventually producing DVDs to share with their friends and family. They work together to produce everything from documentaries and PSAs, to funny short films. The teens have put together several projects including the stop-animation technique with the use of Legos. NEW CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM See What's Cookin' at the Canoga Park High School
|
|
|
Our Club members are enjoying the new Culinary Arts Program at our Canoga Park High School site. The program is designed to teach our teens how to work together to prepare their own meals, as well as to encourage them to develop healthier eating habits by using more nutritious alternatives in their favorite dishes. They have been making healthy meals, including turkey wraps stuffed with vegetables, turkey tacos, fresh salsa, and many more delicious varieties.
Brenda Brandell, cafeteria manager at Canoga Park High School, has been very supportive of the program and assists with the cooking lessons and healthy recipes. She taught the students how to make taco shells using corn tortillas, as well as various chopping and slicing techniques to make fresh salsa. Participating Club members are also learning how to divide up responsibilities in the kitchen and work together in groups to accomplish tasks. They have been gaining more confidence in the kitchen every week and enjoying the process of preparing their own meals from start to finish. More importantly, they are making healthier choices in their eating habits in their everyday lives.

Art History Gives a Picture to the Past
|
|
|
One of our new programs at the Reseda Elementary School site is art history, taught by Coach Mario. The goals of the class are to teach students about the many different artists throughout history and show how art reflects the times. Each week focuses on a different artist, and students have the opportunity to learn about them as well as their famous pieces of work. Coach Mario presents each lesson in a lively and entertaining manner. Students learn about the artist and then are taught how to replicate famous pieces of art. The images shown are from his most recent class where students learned about the famous 16th century artist Leonardo da Vinci, and were being introduced to drawing human faces.

Staff also got into the act and demonstrated their own talents. The kids had fun watching the staff get up on stage as they sang along with staff member Terrell. The children danced and clapped with the rock ‘n’ roll show put on by Michele, Teena, Dolores, and George. The kids were mesmerized by Laurent’s piano playing. Fabulous prizes were handed out to the best performances and small prizes were raffled off to the audience members just for coming to support.
