To celebrate the Club’s 20th Anniversary, a Gala will be held at the Warner Center Marriott Hotel the evening of Friday, July 27, honoring the Club’s Founders and the many generous people who have supported it throughout its 20-year history.
The Founders’ Award will be presented to Bob Voit (Voit Real Estate Services). Bob and a group of community leaders realized in the early 1990s that there was a need for a safe place for kids to go after school and together they started the West Valley Boys & Girls Club. |

They have truly contributed both with their hearts and hands.
Others will be recognized during the evening for the commitment and support of our programs and kids.

5th Annual Cooper Reading Challenge Participate In This Meaningful Experience
|
Five years ago, in celebration of Cooper Communications’ 25th anniversary, Vice Chairman Marty Cooper started the Cooper Reading Challenge to teach children to love and value books and reading.
A $25 sponsorship allows a Club member to go to the Barnes & Noble in Woodland Hills on the afternoons of December 1, 6, 7, 8, and 9 to select one or more books for themselves or a family member. For many of the children, a trip to the bookstore is a “first-time” experience.
The Club staff will select the children who will receive books, based on regularly reading books at the Club and writing a book review. Last year, enough people participated in this project to allow more than 200 Club members to buy one or more books and have the opportunity to learn about the love of reading.
Barnes & Noble is giving our Club members a special 20 percent discount, as well as providing them with snacks and other things to help make this a truly memorable experience for the children who participate. We are grateful for their support of this program.

In a heartfelt speech, 2011 Youth of the Year, Michael Almodovar, thanked the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley staff, who helped him get back on track with his studies, set high goals for himself, and strive for greatness in life.
Michael received a $500 College Sponsorship from the Club, as well as a $1000 for the Ronn Richlin scholarship from Barbara Shore. Youth of the year finalists, Crystal Alvarez and Victor Pineyra each received $250 college sponsorships from the Club, as well.

Cooper Reading Challenge 201 Club Members Sponsored
|
|
The 4th Annual Cooper Reading Challenge was a great success. Two hundred and one Club members had the opportunity to learn about books and the love of reading on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 9, and 14, and to pick out their own books. Each child received $25 to buy books as Holiday presents for parents, brothers, and sisters, and others at Borders Books in Canoga Park.
For many of the children, it was their first time setting foot inside a bookstore. It was a truly memorable experience for the sponsors and the children who participated in this wonderful and enriching program. Underwriting for the program came from dozens of community and business leaders, many of whom attended Borders to help the kids select their books.
The Club thanks Paul Hixenbaugh, general manager of Borders, who made this such a memorable event for our children.

|
Spooky Ghosts! Wicked Witches! Freaky Monsters! On Oct. 29 and 30, The Boys and Girls Club's annual Halloween event had it all! The entire Clubhouse was converted into a spooktacular haunted house, including a fun house for younger children. Children and their families enjoyed food, games, music, entertainment, and prizes. There were chills and thrills around every corner!
According the Club's Events Committee Chair, Ira Harrison, "This was the second year the Club hosted the Halloween Haunted House. It was wonderful to see the West Valley community come together to enjoy the holiday with their family and friends, in benefit of the Club's activities and programs. Denim & Diamonds - Monte Carlo Night A Fabulous Night for Two Wonderful Causes
|
|

The 5th Annual “Denim & Diamonds” Monte Carlo Night hosted by Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart Simpson, was not just a hit...it was spectacular!
The Western-themed event, benefiting both the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley and Devonshire PALS (Police Activity League Supporters,) took place at Nancy Cartwright’s beautiful Northridge estate on October 2, 2010. The entertainment was hosted by Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob Square Pants and also featured country singer Nathan Osmond and others.
It was a night full of fun and philanthropy. Thirteen-year-old Club member Malik Ali made a heartfelt speech about his experiences at the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley during the past three years and how the organization has had a positive effect on his life.
“This is such a great event. I appreciate my celebrity and poker pro friends coming out to support the cause,” said Nancy Cartwright.

4th Annual Mile of Quarters A Huge Success! We Went the Extra Mile for Our Kids and Raised $35,000! |
|
On September 11, National Service Day, hundreds of children, along with their families and friends, came out to support the Boys and Girls Club at our fourth annual Mile of Quarters event. They laid out 63,000 quarters (one mile's worth) at the lower level of the Westfield Topanga Shopping Center. Every year the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley hopes the event will be grander and a greater success than the last. With the help of our sponsors and volunteers, we accomplished this goal! We are proud to announce that more than $35,000 was raised to support our programs for needy youths. A big thanks to all of our generous sponsors, we could not have done this without you! Also, a special thanks to our community, including Girl Scouts of America, Sierra Canyon School, and Chaminade School for volunteering their time in support of the Club's mission to empower and inspire all young people to reach their full potential. Mile of Quarters brought the community closer together and all participants made it a truly unforgettable event! |
